People from all around time began showing up in the 1970's at Hogwarts, after finding the magical stone and touching it, without realizing what happened. Those from the future, and those from the past, no matter how far back, as long as they touched the stone.
The biggest question is, why? What caused the stone to release its previously sealed power? Why the 1970's?
It all started at the Battle of Hogwarts. All of Voldemort's horcruxes were gone, but the elder wand did not belong to Harry at this point, having not disarmed Draco in the Malfoy Manor. The colliding spells broke and Harry was forced to retreat along with most of those who fought with him. Hogwarts had fallen.
After much convincing, Harry agreed to help co-lead those who escaped with him and head up a rebellion against Voldemort. The beginning of the Resistance began. Years passed. Battles were fought, and the Resistance seemed to win just as much as it lost. When they gained ground, they lost ground elsewhere. Seven bases were set up around the world, each was lead by one of the leaders of the Battle of Hogwarts. The Malfoys joined up with the Resistance, after finally deciding to not stay with Voldemort, who threatened to kill their baby son.
Then came a decisive battle, when the Potter generation's kids were still mostly in diapers, if the Resistance won, they would have a clear shot at winning. If not, it would probably be all over. Hermione, Ron, and Ginny Weasley all died in that battle leaving Harry without his best friends and his wife. Hermione and Ron's children were left parent-less, and Harry took on the job of taking care of his three children and their children as well. Though the battle was won, the Resistance never really gained the ground they needed to in proportion to the losses they suffered, especially in morale.
Over time, Harry and Draco became friends and Draco became more of the behind the scenes leader of the Resistance while Harry was more like figure head (he still did quite a bit of the work too, Draco just tended to take over the parts that Harry couldn't because of the depression he was facing). That was when the Resistance found Severus Snape injured, having been in hiding ever since the Battle of Hogwarts.
More time passed. Harry died, their kids were grown up and married themselves, having their own kids. James II took over from his father as the leader of the Resistance, relying on the quite old Severus Snape for advice and guidance.
One day, Albus approached James with a plan. One that could change the past and prevent the entire war, to win the war before it even began. He just needed a special object, one of legends. No one knew where it was, but there were legends and stories about it. A special stone. One they could use to go back in time if he could just get his hands on it.
The earliest history of this stone was way back when Arsinoë Ptolmey, the sister of Cleopatra lived. It was said she carried the stone and upon her death, her body disappeared, due to the stone's power and the stone was sealed so its power would not be used again. The stone was taken from the steps where she was said to die and had been lost ever since.
Things didn't mull over well with everyone, specifically with Scorpius Malfoy. Scorpius believed that the power of the stone was sealed for a reason, and it was not their choice to decide who lived and who died. He and James got into a big fight, and Scorpius left the Resistance, after also fighting and breaking up with his long time girlfriend, Rose Weasley. He formed his own group known only as the Knights, which stole from the dark witches and wizards and gave to those who opposed Voldemort or lived in poverty, with its primary mission to protect the stone Albus wanted to use to change the past.
Those who stayed and worked on the mission to find the stone and change the past became known as a specialized group of the Resistance named called the Templars. The Knights were the first to get a definitive lead on the location of the stone, thanks to a young woman whom Scorpius Malfoy would later marry, but the information was leaked thanks to a spy listening in on when the information was given. The race was on.
Both the Templars and the Knights found the stone, around the same time, and fought over who would take the stone. Scorpius and James got into a duel, and the other Templars distracted the Knights while Albus activated the stone's powers. However, Albus was not as well versed in time as he believed and ripped a hole in the space time continuum, activating the stone throughout time and through the infinite universes that the stone exists in. Anyone who would touch the stone would be zapped through time into the 1970's where Albus and the Templars were attempting to travel to in order to defeat Voldemort before the war really began gaining speed.
However, the stone wouldn't transport the Templars or the Knights back in time but they could see the effects of the stone. History began rapidly changing as time progressed back in the 1970's, with each choice and impact that each of the time travelers had. They knew there was something very wrong, and they had to fix it. The Templars wanted to fix it while still carrying through their plan and the Knights still held firm that history should not be tampered with and this disastrous consequence was proof of it. They began looking for ways to travel back in time and fix the damage done by the activation of the stone.
The Knights turned to The Sage. A mysterious woman who offered a way to fix everything. If each time traveler were sent back, using an enchanted device of her own design, they would loose their memories, other than the strongest of memories which would then seem almost like a dream, and time would be fixed. However, the Sage offered one warning. They could not come back to their own time until the hole in time was fixed.
The Templars discovered how to use the stone to send them back in time and therefore control that which happens in history and allow those who want to go back. The process is still highly dangerous and unpredictable, facing the same dilemma that the Knights would face. They wouldn't know how to come back to their own time, if it were possible at all.
And now, back in 1977, the Templars and the Knights are beginning to emerge, their time of emergence being unpredictable due to the nature of their respective missions, but both with strong convictions in their respective purposes.
