In 1996, Harry Potter was walking through the school, going to a lesson Dumbledore assigned him; however, a curious looking stone caught his eye. As he went to pick it up, he was immediately transported into 1974, when the Marauders were in their fourth year. Completely bewildered by the turn of events, he went to Dumbledore and explained his dilemma, and was warned not to tell future events, and that he would look into the matter.
Two years have passed since Harry made his trip to the Marauder's era. Many people from all over time have been deposited in the Marauder's era; anyone who touched the stone.
The question is why was the stone activated in the first place?
Picture a world where Voldemort won the war. Harry had to escape the Battle of Hogwarts unable to beat Voldemort then. The Order, DA and anyone else who wished to join banned together to form the Resistance. Severus Snape had survived Nagini's attack, thanks to a friend, and went into hiding, eventually joining the Resistance. And eventually, Draco Malfoy and his wife joined the Resistance shortly after their son, Scorpius, was born.
Battles were fought; Hermione, Ron, and Ginny were all lost in a battle when their children were still young, leaving Harry with the burden of leading the Resistance. Draco would eventually become Harry's best friend and help him in leading the Resistance.
However, as things tend to happen, the next generation took over the fight, with James II at the helm. Albus, an inventor at heart, had come up with an idea. He had read about a stone said to have powers of time travel which was sealed many centuries ago. They could go back in time and prevent Voldemort's win. Dissension grew in the group and eventually Scorpius left along with several followers who opposed changing history creating the Knights. Those involved with Albus's plan were a specialized group of the Resistance called the Templars.
Eventually the stone was found, and activated. However, the power went out of control, and activated the stone throughout time and began sucking those who had touched the stone into the 1970's. History was changing rapidly and the only one who could see it were the Knights and the Templars. Both discovered ways to go back in time, but for different purposes. The Templars wish to repair time and still change history so Voldemort loses, while the Knights wish to repair all changes to their history.
The Knights are equipped with devices, given to them by the mysterious Sage, that would force those who were sucked into the 1970's by the stone back to their own time, with memories only of the strongest moments, while everything else would remain fuzzy and hard to recall. The Templars, with similar devices invented by Albus, do not wish to force everyone back, only those who wish to go back to their own time. But neither Templar nor Knight can return to their own time unless every time traveler by stone were sent back to their own times.
Those from the Templar's and Knight's timeline belong to the group "Alternate Future", others from the Post Potter Era belong to a world of the canon, where Voldemort loses.
